We’ve shown you where the children live and sleep – but have left the home of the star of the film (Beastie!) until later due to a number of revisions. As with the village, we began by drawing inspiration from the book’s illustrations – the colour, layout and design is very similar in this early piece of concept artwork below:
As we progressed with the storyboards, we decided to spend longer on this dark and scary setting, and in doing so decided to make the Beastie’s cave even more spooky looking. These cave concept sketches (below) show the cave more as a mouth, using icicles and stalactites as teeth, the markings on the wall as the inside of a mouth and a pile of bones and skulls lying in and around the entrance.
