By Aaron Wood

A rare photo opportunity! You can probably tell from the short sleeves and t-shirts that these photos were taken last summer – when we sat down for one of our first storyboard sessions.

This post is basically to give some background on how the Fearsome Beastie started life as a 3D film – how we went from a 16 page book to a CG short film.

Over the summer of 2013 we held a number of story sessions at Slurpy Studios where Jon and Katie thrashed out how the story should develop from the initial book. We started by pinning up copies of the book pages on the walls – some for reference and some to scribble notes on.

After a lot of tea-drinking and chatting things through our next step was to write the story in script format. Starting with Giles’ poem we started to add descriptions, expand the scenes, and grow the story – all without adding any new narration.

So as not to be precious about our ideas, Katie began sketching the action and shots out. At this stage we were quite fixated on the book and the world inside it, but as the storyboarding went on we began to expand beyond the pages and illustrations of the book.
