The Cave Comes Together – From 3D Model to Atmospheric Paint Over

By Aaron Wood

We have been a little quiet on revealing one of the key locations from the film: the Beastie’s cave. While a lot of work has been going into the village and interior locations, we have been quietly working away on the cave and it’s surrounding location. This post will cover the whole process that saw the cave go from concept art to final 3D model.

The above image shows a rough render of the cave environment layout, while the image below shows the initial stages of modelling the  in SoftImage.

Next up, Jon rendered out a clean 3D model ready for Katie to take into Photoshop to do a paintover and work out the colour and textures.

We were then ready to hand the 3D models over to Boyan to texture. Starting with the small assets (skulls, bones, etc) we tried different levels of realism, but always ended up going for the more ‘cartoony’ look!

The same applied to the cave and it’s surrounding rocks. These may look almost identical but on closer inspection you will see a marked difference.

Finally, we added the 3D snow to give us an idea of what it would look like. The next time you see the cave, it will be fully composited.
